What is Sculptra?

It is a revolutionary treatment which is a sort of non-surgical face lift. It has two objectives: to eliminate wrinkles from various areas of the face and to correct the face symmetry. The treatment is absolutely safe and incredibly effective. Sculptra is an implant, based on poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) - a substance which is naturally found in human organism, designed to smooth away wrinkles.

PLLA ensures both safety and long-term effects. It has been used as a material for restoration of lost volume of the facial tissues, predominantly in the central and lower area of the face. It is also used to improve the texture of inner shoulder and thigh surfaces, back of the hand and stomach lining. It is a wholly absorbable and biodegradable material, which translates into safety for the patient.

Sculptra, - a poly-L-lactic acid polymer – allows to achieve optimum volumetric improvement of the tissues in a natural way, through the production of own collagen. Poly-L-lactic acid has become an ideal complement to the currently popular treatments using botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid, as it allows selective application to individual wrinkles and provides the possibility of comprehensive removal of skin ageing symptoms, such as limpness, loss of hypoderm and resulting depressions in the skin. Facial features become fuller and the face looks younger.

Sculptra works in two stages. In the first stage, the immediate filling of the wrinkles is a result of the injected volume. After a few days the water content of the gel is absorbed and a regression of the corrective effect is observed. Then, the molecules of the poly-L-lactic acid stimulate collagen synthesis and the skin tissue is naturally rebuilt.

The number of treatments depends on individual needs and expectations. On average, 2 – 4 treatments should be carried out with 2-, 4- and 6-week intervals. A minimum interval between subsequent treatments is 15 days.
The corrective effects usually last for 2 – 5 years, however to ensure they are maintained the treatment should be then repeated once or twice a year .

There are two kinds of indications for the treatment: filling (volume improvement) and correction of wrinkles and lines.
Sculptra is used to:
- correct sunken cheeks,
- correct face symmetry,
- remove nasolabial folds,
- lift dropping corners of the mouth.

Treatment

Before the procedure the skin is anaesthetised with a special cream or ice. After the procedure some temporary side effects may occur, such as: swelling, redness or haematomas. All these reactions disappear after a few days. Covering makeup can be applied immediately after the treatment.

The treatment involves two visits. During the first one the doctor injects the material into the upper areas of the face ensuring it is evenly distributed. The injections are made on the zygomatic bone, in the temple and nasolabial areas. Two vials of the preparation are normally used. Then, a break of 6 – 8 weeks follows the first meeting. During the second visit, the doctor injects the preparation into the other areas (around the mouth and in the lower areas of the face) and refills where necessary.

After the procedure a facial massage is performed. The patients are instructed to give the massage to themselves for the subsequent 2 weeks.

What is poly-L-lactic acid?

It is a synthetic molecule invented in 1954 and obtained from the lactic acid, which is a substance which naturally occurs in human organisms. The polymer is commonly used in medicine (stitches). As such, it does not require allergy testing before the procedure.

SCULPTRA is the only aesthetic medicine treatment which can be compared to non-surgical face lift, resulting in skin suppleness and restored tension, and thus eliminating the effect of sunken cheeks.
