What is labiaplasty?

It is a plastic surgery of the female external sex organs, predominantly performed with the following purposes:
- Correction of the symmetry of labia majora and minora,
- Reduction of overgrown labia majora and/or minora,
- Enhancement of the appearance of the labia,
- Rejuvenation of the appearance of sex organs,
- Reconstruction/repair of the labia.

Labiaplasty is one of the most gentle procedures and requires not only proper surgical qualifications and medical knowledge but also expertise.

Labia – overview
Labia Majora (the outer lips) – two thick folds of gentle skin with additional fatty tissue. Their primary function is to protect the female external sexual organs. At the top the two folds are joined in the so-called commisure anterior, under which the clitoris is situated. At the bottom, the labia meet in the commisure posterior. Their overgrowth contributes to redness, irritation or even wounds due to excessive rubbing. Moreover, for many women overgrown, protruding labia look unattractive.

Labia Minora (the inner lips) – two small hairless folds of skin with increased pigmentation (melanin), without sweat glands. In modern medicine the division between bigger (majora) and smaller (minora) labia is becoming obsolete and the terms are gradually replaced with outer and inner labia, respectively. This differentiation is less ambiguous, especially as regards correction of overgrown labia, where the labia minora can be bigger than the outer, labia majora.
Women with overgrown inner labia usually experience psychological discomfort. They claim that protruding skin folds are not aesthetically pleasing. Also, the folds may be difficult to fit into tight underwear or may be an obstacle to some sport activities, causing discomfort and even pain. A surgical intervention consisting in correction of the inner labia may both improve their appearance and positively influence the patient’s emotional well-being. Disproportionate inner labia may be an inborn defect or may have been caused at childbirth or in consequence of an injury.

When is labiaplasty recommended?
Doctors give two main reasons why their female patients decide to undergo this procedure:
- Functional discomfort of the labia,
- Aesthetic grounds.

Why do women decide to have labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty may be performed because the woman wishes to improve the functionality of her sex organ, or on purely aesthetic grounds. Women whose labia are too big feel uncomfortable wearing tight-fit garments, or practising various sports. Overgrown labia also contribute to a low self-evaluation of their sexual attraction.

Causes of deformation of the labia
The main causes of deformation of the labia include the following:
- Hereditary overgrowth of inner and/or outer labia,
- Damage done by numerous childbirths,
- Accidental injuries to the groin area,
- Injuries suffered during sexual intercourses.

The best candidates
The best candidates to labiaplasty are women who feel any form of discomfort connected with the overgrown labia, whether it is pain while doing some activities, irritant rubbing or sexual dysfunction. Moreover, some women cannot tolerate the appearance of their sex organs which may be a big problem as it leads to complexes.
