Phimosis treatment
Phimosis
is an inborn or acquired defect in men, where the narrow foreskin cannot be retracted from the penis head (full phimosis) or can only be retracted partially (relative phimosis), whether in the state of erection or not. The Latin name comes from the Greek φϊμός (muzzle).
Phimosis can be viewed as a pathological condition at a certain stage of organic development, as in most newborn male babies, infants and children to the age of about 3 years the foreskin is not retractable from the glans groove, which is a normal physiological state. In infants the foreskin is sealed to the glans with smegma.
Pathological phimosis also occurs when the foreskin can be moved to the glans groove but resulting in compression and pain when the penis is erect.
There are a few cases where phimosis can be diagnosed:
- full phimosis: the foreskin does not enable uncovering of the glans
- relative (partial):
the glans can only be partially uncovered,
the glans can be fully uncovered when the penis not erect
the glans can be fully uncovered, also with erect penis, but causing the foreskin to clamp in the glans groove
Phimosis can be inborn or acquired, the latter at any age, even by elderly men.
Treatment
Phimosis may be treated surgically already when the child is two years old, however at the initial stage phimosis may be treated by stretching, e.g. of bath-heated foreskin (Beaugé method). Nevertheless, most often a portion or the whole foreskin is surgically removed. When the condition is not severe the opening of the foreskin is surgically widened in local anaesthesia. Recovery lasts a little more than two weeks. Alternatively, the procedure of circumcision is performed to the same effect as surgery.
