Cryptorchidism
undescended testes, is a birth defect in male infants, which consists in incorrect positioning of one or both testes - in the abdominal cavity or the inguinal canal. Undescended testes are subject to overheating, which favours the development of testicle tumours and may stop the production of sperm, resulting in infertility.
Cryptorchidism occurs in about 4% of male infants, but in the first year of life the percentage drops to 1 as the testes spontaneously descend into the scrotum. Unilateral cryptorchidism occurs five times more often than bilateral.
Treatment involves the application of gonadotropin, and where it fails, of a surgical procedure. It is essential to start treatment as early as possible.
