Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
Blepharoplasty is a procedure which eliminates developing signs of ageing. With time, muscles lose their strength and skin becomes less elastic. This leads to the development of creased, sagging skin folds around the eyes. Eyelid surgery consists in removal of excess skin, fatty tissue and fragments of muscles that move the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure allows the elimination of the effect of “drooping eyelids” which gives the face a tired look and of the lower eyelid skin fold, forming “eye bags”. Additionally, it smoothens out the skin and removes wrinkles, making the eyes look bigger and the face younger. Blepharoplasty is often combined with other face rejuvenation procedures.
The excess tissues are removed through a cut made with a special carbon dioxide laser in the areas of natural creases of the eyelids, so that the scars are hardly visible.
Blepharoplasty is applied with local anaesthesia and the patient is fully awake throughout the procedure. Recovery lasts between one and two weeks. In that time slight pain and irritation of the eyes may occur (ask the doctor to prescribe or recommend suitable medicine). Sometimes swelling and bruising occurs. Stitches are removed after a few days, and any discomfort should disappear within 14 days following the procedure. It is essential to ensure that during the recovery the blood pressure in the head area does not increase, so physical efforts, bending over and lifting weights are to be strictly avoided. The patient should rest and stay at home.
