Liposuction/lipoplasty (aspiration of fatty tissue)

Liposuction, also called lipoplasty, removes local deposits of fatty tissue, to provide the body with a cleaner and slimmer shape. In order to obtain the best possible results the patient should be of quite a normal weight with excess fat concentrated in specific areas only, such as: hips, buttocks, stomach, thighs and knees. Liposuction is also effective when applied to remove excess fat from the back, shoulders, face and neck.
Liposuction may not be regarded as an alternative to healthy diet and physical activity, nor as a slimming method. The treatment will not eliminate cellulite or flaccid, sagging skin. The best results are achieved when the patient’s skin is healthy, flexible and capable of even contracting after the surgical procedure. If the skin has lost much of its elasticity a stretching procedure may be necessary, for example an abdominal lift, thigh lift, buttock lift or shoulder lift.

The procedure may involve local anaesthesia (usually by means of sedatives), but also partial or general anaesthesia, which depends on the surgeon’s decision made with regard to the safest and best surgical procedure to be applied in each individual case. Liposuction is normally carried out by means of a vacuum pump which sucks off the excess fat deposits from the subcutaneous areas. In certain cases a manual device (syringe) can be used instead of the suction pump. After the procedure a compression garment or belt must be worn for up to a few weeks, in order to speed up the shrinking of the skin and minimise swelling. The patient may expect to return to work after 1-2 weeks, depending on the extent of the procedure.
