Abdominoplasty
Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
Abdominoplasty, or abdominal wall surgery, is a surgical procedure which consists in removal of the skin and fat fold in the middle and lower sections of the abdomen and tightening of the abdominal wall muscles. The result is an improved shape of the abdomen and the whole body and general well-being. The surgery is often chosen by women whose abdominal walls are substantially stretched after numerous pregnancies. With time, the flexibility of abdominal walls is largely decreased and the locally accumulated fatty tissue can indicate the need for a combined fat reduction procedure and abdominoplasty. Women who intend to have children in the future, as well as people suffering from obesity unfortunately may not undergo abdominoplasty.
Preparation for the surgery
Before abdominoplasty, for 7-10 days the patient may not smoke cigarettes, take Aspirin or derivative drugs, and apply drastic dieting. Failure to observe those indications will result in extended healing time after the procedure.
Anaesthesia
The decision on the kind of anaesthesia is made by the anaesthetist. The procedure is usually performed using epidural or general endotracheal anaesthesia.
Post-operative procedures
The wound is dressed and a special compressive garment is used. Due to the extent of the wound the patient will feel tenderness of the area, swelling and general weakness will occur along with possible loss of feeling in the area, which is gradually restored during the next few months following the surgery. The first 24 hours after the procedure should be spent in bed. The patient may restore normal activity after about 14 days, however the period may extend to a few weeks in individual cases. It all depends on the physical activity and lifestyle of the patient. In any case no strenuous exercises are allowed.
