Fractional Laser Treatment
Fractional laser (CO2)
It is used to rejuvenate the face, hands and neckline, as well as to remove acne scars. The laser uses carbon dioxide as the laser medium. The word ‘fractional’ means that the laser beam operates within micro-zones while leaving the other areas unaffected. As a result, the unaffected areas stimulate regeneration of the damaged zones.
The use of fractional laser results in both improved skin structure as regards its texture, pigmentation and dilated pores, and stimulation of the dermis (fibroblasts) to form new collagen structures, thus triggering a collagen remodelling process.
The time of recovery varies depending on the set parameters: the number of pulses per square cm, the power setting and the duration of pulse. The higher the pulse power, the bigger the number and duration of pulses, the more invasive the procedure, and therefore the bigger the inflammation and the longer the healing, but – at the same time – the better the final results. Depending on the condition of the skin, patient’s individual predisposition and their ability to temporarily withdraw from daily routines, the best pulse parameters are determined.
The procedure is applied with local anaesthesia and is practically painless. Immediately after the procedure some redness is visible and the skin itself seems strained. Occasionally, swelling occurs. Two or three hours after the procedure the patient will feel burn-like pain of the skin. Cold compresses should be placed on the affected areas then and some soothing cream may be applied. When the redness fades the skin becomes brownish and the patient may use covering makeup and return to work. It happens about 5-6 days after the procedure, however a week usually passes before the skin comes back to its normal state. On average, 6-7 days following treatment the skin looks normal, or may be slightly blushed, which depends on the power of the pulses.
After fractional laser treatment positive effects on the skin surface (change of the texture, colour, roughness and pore size) become visible quite early, as soon as the swelling subsides and the epidermis is shed, i.e. after 5-14 days, depending on the parameters of the procedure. Collagen remodelling takes place within 3 to 6 months after the procedure. The best results are achieved if the procedure is repeated over 6-8 weeks.
